Industrial designer, artist and educator Sung Jang creates works that while indebted to functionality, also push past it.  He is concerned with design’s roles and capabilities within social, cultural, emotional and artistic contexts.  One of his research interests is to understand and articulate qualitative attributes such as beauty, elegance and extravagance as a clear set of insights for a methodology or design. For his commissioned work at Fashion Outlets of Chicago, Jang has stacked his own lightweight modules, designed to successfully divide and distribute weight, to create his large-scale suspended forms. Here, the final structures depict whales, which for the artist embody scale and organic form. They are positioned in such a way as to suggest monumental, yet graceful, movement.
